Broome County government now reports at least 260 residents have died due to Covid-19 since the pandemic began - an increase of 24 people since the last update.

County Executive Jason Garnar attributed the big jump in the official death count to "updated data."

In a statement released Monday afternoon, Garnar said the two dozen deaths "occurred throughout the month of January." He said those who died were in their 70s through their 90s.

The county executive did not indicate how many of the deaths involved people who had been nursing home patients. There also was no explanation as to what caused the delay in the county receiving the numbers.

The current report showed 123 people with Covid-19 hospitalized in Broome County. There were 949 active cases in the county.
