A collision involving a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction in the town of Kirkwood has resulted in the death of the two drivers and injuries to two young children.

According to New York State Police, the crash on Route 17 happened around 11:20 p.m.

Investigators say a 2011 Kia Sorento was westbound in the eastbound when it slammed into a 2005 GMC Yukon.

The wrong-way vehicle was driven by a 50-year-old Hallstead man. The other SUV was operated by a 27-year-old Windsor woman.

The man was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he was pronounced dead. The woman was extricated from the Yukon and then transported to Wilson, where she died as a result of her injuries.

Two children - ages 3 and 4 - who were in the Yukon sustained bleeding to the head and facial area. A 29-year-old man and a one-year-old child who also were passengers in that vehicle were not hurt.

A third vehicle was struck by debris from the head-on crash. The driver of that car was not injured.
