Two-County Chase in Stolen U-Haul Ends in Cortland

New York State Police say they chased a driver in a suspicious U-Haul box van from near the state fairgrounds in Syracuse into Cortland County where the vehicle was halted by stop sticks deployed by the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.

22-year-old Tyshawn Allen of Syracuse is accused of speeding off in the stolen vehicle when troopers tried to stop him at around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Troopers assigned to the state fair were traveling on Hiawatha Boulevard when they attempted to pull over the U-Haul, activating their emergency lights.

The operator drove off, onto Interstate 81 South traveling into Cortland County where the Sheriff’s Deputies deployed tire deflation spikes near Exit 11.

Troopers say, during the chase, they determined the U-Haul had been stolen.

Allen is charged with felony criminal possession of stolen property as well as misdemeanor unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving and speeding.

Allen was sent to the Onondaga County Justice Center.
