Tons of Stinking Trash Removed from Dickinson "Garbage Garage"

A town of Dickinson garage that had been filled with garbage and rats has finally been emptied.

People who live around the Bigelow Street property had repeatedly complained about the deplorable conditions that were making their lives miserable.

After their concerns were reported by WNBF News, a large dumpster was dropped off and workers removed the accumulated trash.

Town supervisor Michael Marinaccio credited the Broome County Health Department with taking steps to get the garbage out of the garage next to a vacant house.

Marinaccio said "they played a major role in being able to mitigate this really terrible, serious issue that we had there for the past year." He said the department "took a very tough stance" on the matter threatening fines if action wasn't taken.

The supervisor said "money speaks" in cases like this. He said fines are appropriate in cases in which property owners who "cause such great harm to the neighborhoods."

Marinaccio said there still are some "major issues" which must be addressed at the house. He said the property owners must install a new sewer system and deal with some structural problems before the place can be rented.

A woman who lives next to the house said she was very pleased that the trash had finally been cleared from the garage. She said the dumpster was hauled out of the driveway Monday.

But she said the smell of "urine and feces" remains in the garage. She said when she looked into the garage, she saw "three very confused rats" apparently wondering what had happened to the garbage.
