Downtown Binghamton motorists who drive around the Security Mutual Building could encounter occasional street closings while maintenance work is underway.

A section of Exchange Street was shut down for a time while a crane was used to hoist construction materials to the top of the ten-story structure.

Security Mutual's Rick Wortman said the project involves resurfacing the building's water table. Crews will be removing and replacing the deck of the four-foot extension around the roof.

Wortman said this type of work must be done every several years to properly maintain the building. He said the street near the building may be closed periodically as the project continues. The work is expected to be completed within the next four to six weeks.

Scaffolding has been set up to protect pedestrians using the sidewalks along Court and Exchange streets.

The Security Mutual Building is one of the city's most prominent landmarks. It was built in 1904.
