It's still May, right? We've had warm days, cool days, and what we would typically call May weather since you never know what the month will bring. I can remember many Memorial Day Weekends when it was cold enough to almost snow.

Camping season began for me on May 1st, and every weekend has had a good amount of rain. Go figure. But according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, we are about to get a taste of hot summer days. At least for Friday and through the weekend.

As of this writing (and you know our weather forecast can chance on a dime), Friday's high in the Binghamton area is forecasted to be 85, Saturday - 98, and Sunday - 87. And then in true Southern Tier and Northeast Pennsylvania, the temperature will drop on Monday to a high of 65.

Granted, I can't complain too much. Winter is over, so there's a reason not to be upset about weird temperature swings. Now, given that we have unusually hot weather arriving for a few days, now is the time to be reminded of ways to stay safe if you plan on spending time outdoors in the heat this weekend, and for the upcoming summer season for that matter.

The US National Weather Service in Binghamton has some common-sense tips to beat the heat and be safe during hot weather days. They include limiting outdoor activities if possible, staying hydrated - drinking lots of water, staying away from alcohol consumption (I know this may not go over well with some), wearing light clothing, and using the appropriate sunscreen.

Also, if you plan on working outdoors during hot weather days, if you can, do so early or late on the days when the temperatures are cooler.
