Take a Virtual Tour and Learn Some Local History Today

My daughter, Tara, loved it when we went to Gettysburg and took a guided tour of one of the cemeteries. We had a chance to hear the stories and look for orbs in the night. We'll never forget it and we hope to go back again.

Well, now we can take a trip that's not so far away...and we don't even need to leave the house. We can take a virtual tour of the Evergreen Cemetery in Owego. It gives us a chance to not only see who is there but learn about the notable people that are buried there.

It is the final resting place for over 9,200 residents and Owego Town Historian, Peter Gordon has put together over 125 biographies. They can be geolocated on a Google Map Satellite View and a rendered map.

People of interest include Helen Dean King's grave. You can learn about the most important American woman scientist in the early 20th century. You can find out about Oscar Barton, who at the time of his death was the oldest Federal Civil War veteran in the Eastern US.

While you're on your tour, you'll want to check out the Sa-Sa-Na Loft monument. It's believed to be the oldest monument in the United States dedicated to a Native woman and the second oldest monument to a Native person.

You can follow a suggested walking route by clicking on dots along the route to see the individual graves in the area. You can see their picture and learn more about the person that is buried there.
