Syracuse Firm Interested in Former Endicott Plaza Site

Endicott's mayor says a central New York company is looking at an abandoned retail site in the village as a possible location for a training facility.

John Bertoni Friday said he has had conversations with representatives of a Syracuse business about the old Endicott Plaza property between Vestal and Harrison avenues.

The 18-acre site is located just east of Jennie F. Snapp Middle School. A Kmart store, the final business in the plaza, closed suddenly as a result of flooding in September 2011.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Bertoni said the people from Syracuse expressed an interest in developing a sales and training facility "for large-scale equipment."

Bertoni did not identify the business or elaborate on what the project might entail.

State funds last year were authorized to pay for demolishing the old Kmart building. But the mayor and others familiar with the structure say it's still in good condition despite being unused for the past seven years.

The plaza shopping center was developed in 1963 on a site that had been used as an Endicott Johnson Corporation dump.
