SUNY Broome Head Athletic Trainer Jon Smith has been recognized nationally for his outstanding work with student athletes.  Smith was honored as the National Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine (ICSM)  2019 Head Athletic Trainer of the Year in the Community College/NJCAA setting.  There are 636 two-year institutions in the United States.

Every year the National Athletic Trainer's Association Intercollegiate Council of Sports Medicine recognizes one individual for exceptional performance as a head athletic trainer at various levels.  Awards are issued at the NCAA Division I level, NCAA Division 2 level, NCAA Division 3 level plus NAIA, Junior College/Community College and Club, Intramural and Recreational Sports.

The award was presented today (Wednesday) in Las Vegas during the NATA 70th Clinical Symposium and Athletic Training EXPO ICSM meeting at Mandala Bay Resort.

Smith has extensive experience on both the professional and collegiate levels.  He spent 18 years working in professional hockey and has been the Assistant Director of Athletics and Head Athletic Trainer at SUNY Broome since 2001.  Smith is a member of both the Toronto, Ohio High School Athletics Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. He was named the first recipient of the  NJCAA Region III Athletic Trainer of the Year award for the 2017-18 season.
