Spencer Man Accused of Trying to Hold Up S. New Berlin Convenience Store
A Spencer man is accused of attempting to hold up a gas station in South New Berlin.
Chenango County Sheriff’s officials say they got a silent alarm from the Mirabito in the Town of South New Berlin at 4:22 in the afternoon Sunday, January 23.
As patrols responded to the silent alarm, they got a call from the store saying a man had come into the gas station and demanded money from an employee. When he was unsuccessful, he fled the scene.
Authorities say the clerk was able to describe the suspect and provide the license information for a vehicle involved in the incident.
New York State Police encountered the vehicle and stopped it on State Highway 320 in the Town of Norwich with the help of the Norwich City Police.
28-year-old Jesey Smith is charged with felony Attempted Robbery. He was sent to the Chenango County Jail without bail.
Investigators say Smith allegedly simulated that he had a gun concealed in his jacket and demanded money and cigarettes from the clerk, who did not comply. There were no injuries.
Two others in the car with him were also taken into custody. They have not yet been charged.
The investigation is continuing.
