Some Technical Parole Violations May Not Mean Back to Jail in NY

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a measure that would let some parole violators avoid a return to jail.

The measure signed September 17 would do away with re-incarceration for parolees who get in trouble for a minor technical issue. That could include being tardy for a meeting with one's parole officer, moving to a new address without properly notifying authorities, being late making curfew or missing a mandated program like therapy session.

The leniency measure does not apply to parolees who reoffend or commit a violent act.

Supporters of jail and bail reform measures say the change is a boost for not only combating recidivism but also saves money in police expenses, processing and court costs.

Opponents argue the change favors offenders and does not consider the victims of crimes.
