You need to be 21 years old to partake in alcohol, and you soon may need to be the same age to smoke.

A new proposed law in NYS will make it illegal to sell tobacco to anyone under the age of 21. This law also includes vaping.

The state Assembly voted overwhelmingly for the bill that would raise the age on Wednesday.

The bill will now head to the Democrat lead Senate. If the bill passes there, Governor Andrew Cuomo has already said he would sign the bill into law.

According to the Democrat and Chronicle:

Most New York residents already live in a county or municipality with a smoking age of 21.

Statewide, at least 20 counties or cities ban the sale of tobacco products to those under the age of 21, including New York City and Westchester, Rockland and Tompkins counties.
