Safety Concerns Raised About Abandoned Prospect Terrace School

An old school building in a Town of Dickinson neighborhood may be torn down if repairs aren't made to the structure.

The former St. Stanislaus elementary school complex at 370 Prospect Street hasn't been used for several years.

People who live in the Prospect Terrace neighborhood near the school have complained about deteriorating conditions at the building.

Town supervisor Michael Marinaccio said a church organization had acquired the property. He said he was unsure what had been planned for the building.

Windows at the old school have been broken and the structure now is in a state of disrepair.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Marinaccio said the new owners "haven't done a thing with it." He said they've been cited several times for code violations.

Marinaccio described the building as a "mess." He said the case likely will be going to court soon. If the owners don't address the problems, he said the structure eventually could be condemned and demolished.

According to a story in The Evening Press, the three-story building was constructed in 1917. It was renovated for use as a school in 1960.

A sign now on the rear side of the building shows that it once was used as a BOCES learning center.
