The Broome County district attorney has issued a "Public Safety Alert" warning residents of a "deadly batch of cocaine" in the region.

Stephen Cornwell issued a statement late Thursday afternoon urging people to be aware of fentanyl-laced cocaine which has been found in the county.

In the statement, the DA noted fentanyl is "50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine." It said when it is combined with other drugs, including cocaine, it becomes "even more deadly."

The statement requested that residents contact law enforcement authorities with any information about the fentanyl-laced cocaine.

Cornwell's alert was issued the day after Broome County Executive Jason Garnar declared a State of Emergency following several drug-related deaths in recent days.

It came a few hours after county police department representatives and other officials met in Binghamton to discuss what steps might be taken to deal with what's being described as a "deadly fentanyl emergency."
