Relief: Binghamton Rumble Ponies to Remain As “Double-A” Team

It's official. The Binghamton Rumble Ponies will continue to be a class "Double-A" affiliate of the New York Mets.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David Wednesday morning hailed the news that the team will remain at the same level it has been at since baseball returned to the city in 1992.

David noted there had been widespread speculation that the "die had already been cast and that Binghamton was going to lose its Double-A minor league baseball team and that nothing more could be done."

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, the mayor said a coalition of local, state and federal officials came together with the thought that "we're not ready to give up on this."

David noted significant improvements have been made to NYSEG Stadium in recent years to address concerns expressed by New York Mets officials.

Although the Rumble Ponies last played in Binghamton more than 14 months ago, the city has been maintaining the stadium. Workers were inside the Henry Street complex Wednesday making repairs.

There is no indication when the next baseball game will be held in Binghamton. The schedule for next season will be contingent on health guidelines in effect for the Covid-19 pandemic.
