Bald eagles seem to be in the news lately. I have always found it exciting when I spot a bald eagle flying around the Southern Tier of New York and Northeast Pennsylvania. They are majestic birds and a symbol of our country!

Recently, one of our Townsquare authors wrote an article about the installation of a new tower viewer and signage along the Route 434 Greenway near MacArthur Park in Binghamton, offering everyone a special focus on a pair of nesting bald eagles in the vicinity, in addition to a naming contest. Check out more on the article HERE.

Here's another feel-good story about a bald eagle in Erie County, New York. According to the Erie County SPCA, the organization is caring for a female bald eagle recently discovered in distress in Great Valley.

On the Erie County SPCA Facebook post, it was noted that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation transported the eagle to the Wildlife Department to receive urgent care.

Upon arrival, the team determined that the bald eagle was weak and had a corneal opacity in her right eye. Those two factors are signs of bird flu. The bald eagle was isolated to keep it from spreading to other animals at the SPCA. Tests confirmed the bald eagle was positive for bird flu.
According to the Eric County SPCA, there are no specific medications that can combat bird flu directly. They have been providing the bald eagle with supportive care along with treatment including pain relief, eye medication, and antifungal medications. The SPCA notes that the treatment had brought about positive results.

The bald eagle tested negative for bird flu and underwent toe amputation surgery. The goal is for a complete recovery and return to the wild. Check out the Erie County Facebook post below.
