Public Comment Period Extended for Litium Ion Battery Recycling Plan in Endicott

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is extending the comment period on a proposal for a lithium-ion battery recycling facility on the Huron Campus in Endicott. 

November 15, the DEC said it was extending the public comment period for an additional 15 days. That would give residents to about December 5^th to offer more input.

State regulators hosted a meeting November 6 at which the procedures for battery recycling at the proposed SungEel MCC Americas site on Clark Street were outlined.

While the development is promising dozens of jobs, some residents expressed concerns about the impact on water, soil and air quality as well as the safe handling of the batteries in cell phones, electric vehicles and other products following reports of the past few years of lithium ion battery explosions and fires.

The application documents are available for review at the George F. Johnson Memorial Library.

After the second comment period, the DEC says it will assess the public comments received and make a decision for a need for a public hearing based on the applicable regulatory criteria.
