An official update is awaited as Broome County Sheriff David Harder reminds motorcyclists that New York State law requires they wear a DOT approved helmet, face shield and/or goggles and protective clothing is advised. The warning comes following a motorcycle crash on Interstate 81 South in the Town of Dickinson at 5:05 a.m. July 27 that sent 41 year old James Peart of Binghamton to the hospital in critical condition.  Peart was wearing a helmet that was not a Department of Transportation approved piece of equipment.

Witnesses told Deputies that the Harley Davison motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed into the rear of a car near exit five, causing Peart to lose control.

The motorcycle slid across the highway and into the median where Peart was ejected.

Authorities say he sustained serious head injuries and was taken to Wilson Hospital.

The driver of the car was not hurt and was able to drive that vehicle from the scene.

Peart’s motorcycle was taken by authorities for a mechanical inspection.

A section of Interstate 81 South was closed for almost three hours while the investigation was underway.
