
New York Families Can Expect Bigger Child Tax Credits This Year
Are you excited? Tax season is here. For most of my working life, I look forward to tax season because I have always received a refund, either from New York State, the IRS, or, in most cases, both.
Last year, though, due to some issues, I ended up paying a lot back to the Feds. That hurt. Well, I straightened that issue out quickly...at least I think I did. I'll find out soon enough when I get back the results from my tax preparer.

Tax Filing Season For 2025 Has Begun
Filing opened for the 2025 tax year on January 26, 2026. Returns are due no later than April 15, 2026, unless you are filing for an extension.
The New York State Department of Taxation notes that for the 2025 tax year, the Empire State is tripling the maximum amount of its child credit for children under age four from $330 to $1,000 per child. Get more information from the NYS Department of Taxation website.
Also, New Yorkers who have children between the ages of four and sixteen can expect an increase in the maximum credit amount from $330 to $500 per child for the tax year 2026.

New Federal 2025 Tax Law Changes
According to the IRS, some provisions that may reduce tax bills or increase refunds. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill, includes several new deductions and credits. For more information and tips, visit the IRS website.
By the way, the Internal Revenue Service is phasing out paper tax refund checks. Taxpayers are encouraged to e IRS encourages taxpayers who do not have a bank account to open a bank account if they do not have one, allowing any refunds to be received by direct deposit.
