New York State is moving below 100 deaths from the coronavirus, hitting the benchmark twice in the past few days.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced May 25 COVID-19 deaths in the state May 24 were 96.  The mortality rate overnight May 22 was at 109 after being reported at 84 the day before.  New York has not had mortality rates from the coronavirus since April,

Statewide, there were 1,249 new cases bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Empire State to 362,764.

The numbers are being watched carefully as more areas of the state gradually ease restrictions and start to reopen.

There was no daily update for Broome County May 25.  Over the weekend, the number of cases exceeded 500 to 509 and the death toll remained at 32.  In Chenango County, there are 118 cases with five deaths, 41 cases in Cortland County with one death, 72 cases in Delaware County with four deaths and 132 confirmed cases since the pandemic began in Tioga County with 21 deaths.

The Southern Tier Region is currently in phase one of the state’s reopening plans with plans to move to the next phase on Friday that will include reopening more businesses, including administrative services, retail and much anticipated hair salons.  The region must continue to meet the metrics involving infection rates, hospitalization, supplies of personal protective equipment and other criteria in order to move to the next level.
