The first time I heard the words 'summer job' out of my dad's mouth, I was just about to turn 16 and school was soon to let out for the summer.

I thought that was the worst suggestion I'd ever heard. School's out, summer's here and there's a couple of months or so to do whatever I want, including doing nothing but relaxing in the warmth of summer.

Well, that didn't go over well as you would expect, and I ended up taking a job picking grapes at a vineyard on the side of a hill overlooking Seneca Lake just north of Watkins Glen. At least the view was spectacular. I rode to work every day with a couple of my uncles who also took advantage of the summer work.

It turned out to be a great job. I got some exercise and lots of sunshine for the summer, in addition to getting paid. The next summer, I took a job at a full service car wash. Our goal was to get every drop of water off each vehicle that went through the car wash before they rolled out the door. And we did it without fail.

If you are looking for a summer job, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDot) has job openings for their summer maintenance program through October. The PennDot news release lists the following jobs statewide and in several counties in Pennsylvania along with the pay scale:
