Binghamton Mayor Richard David is making one thing perfectly clear: Main Street is not about to be renamed in honor of President Donald Trump.

The idea of naming all or part of Main Street in recognition of the nation's 45th president was brought up last month by a regular caller to WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program.

Speaking on the program on Tuesday, the Republican mayor said: "There are no plans for the city to name any street after anyone at this time."

David dismissed a New York Post story headline that declared: "Upstate town fights it out over naming street after Trump." He asked: "I'm not sure... who's fighting it out?"

The mayor said he's heard "mostly negative things" in reaction to the proposal made by Binghamton resident John Solak.

David said usually when a street is named in someone's honor, it's "after a specific accomplishment or a lifetime of accomplishments." He cited other former presidents and Martin Luther King Jr.

The mayor said he believes there are other ways to "build a productive working relationship" with Trump other than naming a street for him.

David was in Washington Friday for the inauguration and attended an inaugural ball with his father.
