Maple Syrup Is Great On Pancakes But It’s So Much More
Are you a fan of maple syrup? If you are like me, that would be a yes. My problem is I tend to overdo it when pouring maple syrup on foods like pancakes and waffles. I say you can never get enough.
Fortunately, we live in maple syrup country. The options of places to buy different types of maple syrup is almost endless and it's produced right here. You've no doubt seen trees tapped when taking the late winter or early spring back road ride. Tapping trees for syrup is a timing issue. It depends of the temperature. Sap begins to flow in late winter to early spring. The website Tap My Trees notes:
"Sap flows when daytime temperatures rise above freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit / 0 Celsius) and nighttime temperatures fall below freezing. The rising temperature creates pressure in the tree generating the sap flow."
But that's not an issue for most of us who love maple products. We are not producing the syrup, we are just consuming it. And there are so many types of products to enjoy, not just maple syrup.
Where I camp in the endless Mountains of Pennsylvania, it seems you can't throw a stone without hitting a store or a roadside stand offering up the different varieties of maple products, and I have to admit Pennsylvania maple products are really delicious.
LOCALsyr.com recently reported about researchers at Cornell University in Ithaca are developing new maple products like wine and chocolate and at the same time, help grow the industry in New York State. Maybe I should contact the University to find out if they need a new maple product taste tester. Someone's gotta do it, right?
Maple syrup has several other uses than what you might normally use it for. Ben's Maple Syrup mentions uses such as dips, artificial sweeteners, health and even to infuse your booze. I like that. Maple syrup...It's not just for drowning your pancakes.
