Kirkwood FedEx Distribution and Sorting Facility Now Operating
The FedEx Ground automated package sorting center east of Binghamton has opened.
The company on Monday announced the automated facility has become operational in time for the holiday shipping season.
The 470,000-square-foot complex was built on a site that had been occupied by Link and L-3 Communications on Industrial Park Drive in the town of Kirkwood.
The iconic Link Flight Simulation facility was demolished by Gorick Construction last year.
After the demolition job was completed, Gorick crews provided over 300,000 cubic yards of site excavation, retaining walls and utility-related work.
According to a FedEx Ground news release, the new Kirkwood facility is one of about 160 "fully-automated stations" which handle more than 97 percent of the company's daily package volume.
FedEx Ground is preparing to hire 150 workers for the Kirkwood site to prepare for the holiday season. Many of those hired could remain with the company after the busy shipping season.
Information about available jobs at the Kirkwood facility may be found at fedexgroundjobs.com.
