Massive FedEx Distribution Center Set to Open Near Binghamton
FedEx Ground workers are about to get their first look inside a huge distribution and sorting facility that's been constructed in the town of Kirkwood.
The 458,000-square-foot center was built on a site that had been occupied by Link and L-3 Communications on Industrial Park Drive.
FedEx Ground drivers in the Binghamton area told WNBF News they are looking forward to being able to tour the facility over the next few days. The delivery company's Broome County package distribution operations in recent years have been based at a nearby site in the town of Conklin.
A FedEx Ground spokesperson declined to provide information about the impending opening of the Kirkwood center and how many people might be hired to work there.
Local FedEx employees said they expect the new facility will become operational within the next couple of weeks.
Broome County and Kirkwood officials have said they expect about 300 people will work at the site.
Construction work for the distribution center's offices were completed a few weeks ago. In recent days, final paving operations have been underway on the north side of the building, which is adjacent to Interstate 81.
Dozens of FedEx Ground trailers have been towed to the site and put into position on the south side of the facility.
