Johnson City Store Shocks Drivers with $1.23 a Gallon Gas Sign
Motorists driving past a Johnson City convenience store did a double take when they saw a the big price display suggesting gasoline was available at a deep discount.
Some people who saw the "1.239" price for regular gas on a sign at Apple Foods on Riverside Drive stopped by to fill up with the faint hope they might be able to save a lot of money.
While some people initially were shocked by the prospect of paying 1997 prices for gasoline in 2022, they weren't surprised when they learned it was too good to be true.
A couple of people fueling their vehicles Wednesday afternoon laughed about the sign glitch, which was visible to drivers traveling west on Riverside Drive. Eastbound drivers saw the actual price: $4.219 a gallon.
One man who was filling up laughed when asked about the prospect of cheap gas after prices have soared dramatically over the last several weeks. He said "it would be nice" but acknowledged he wasn't duped by the erroneous display.
A store employee said he noticed the inaccurate sign display Tuesday evening but he believed it had been fixed before he closed up the store. He said the problem developed again Wednesday. He suspected the trouble was weather-related.
The worker said a few customers had mentioned the sign display but didn't seem bothered that they weren't able to buy gas for the price they paid 25 years ago.
