Today in Classic Rock History

In 1966

In 1967
The movie "How I Won The War," featuring John Lennon, had its New York premiere.

In 1970
Doors frontman Jim Morrison recorded some of his poems.  Several years after his death, the other members of the group put music to the material, which became the album "An American Prayer."
(And the lizard king lives on!)
In 1971
Paul McCartney threw a party at the Empire Ballroom in London to launch his new group, Wings. (Oh, I misunderstood... I thought THAT WAS THE MENU!)

In 1975

In 1979
The Grateful Dead released the album "Shakedown Street."

In 1980
Guitarist Adrian Smith joined Iron Maiden.  Smith replaced Dennis Stratton. (hey, it's heavy metal, baby)

In 1985

In 1986
Boston hit number one on the pop singles chart with "Amanda." (Beat their original title, 'Betty')

1994
The Eagles released the album "Hell Freezes Over." (It must have for them to work together again)

In 1996
Bruce Springsteen played a benefit concert for a church-run community center in his hometown of Freehold, New Jersey.

In 2002
Guns N' Roses North American tour got off to a rough start, as Axl Rose reportedly strained his vocal cords trying to compensate for a faulty sound system at the band's show in Tacoma, Washington. (it was either that, or he was drunk and stoned again)

In 2006
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band launched a tour in support of the CD "Face the Promise" with a show in Saginaw, Michigan.  It was the group's first road trip in a decade, supporting Seger's first album in 12 years.

Surviving members of The Doors marked the 40th anniversary of the group with a trio of events along Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. (They invited Jim... but he was a no show)

Fats Domino received the key to New York City from Mayor Michael Bloomberg in recognition of his efforts to raise money for struggling musicians in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

In 2009
Charlie Daniels and Kid Rock were among the artists added to the Music City Walk of Fame in Nashville. (That would be a hell of a show, right there!)

In 2011
David Crosby and Graham Nash performed for Occupy Wall Street demonstrators camped out at lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park.  (Thank goodness he wasn't performing for another Melissa baby... if ya get my drift?)
