Some people in western Broome County were concerned when they heard what sounded like loud explosions.

Residents of Ross Corners told WNBF News there were three or four "blasts" over a period of about an hour late Wednesday morning.

A man who lives on Arlington Avenue was mystified by all the racket. He reported: "We are hearing very loud bangs that are shaking the houses."

The man said the final blast occurred around 11:35 a.m. when he was outside his home. He said "it sounded like a cannon going off." He said he "could feel it in the ground."

Another resident of the street described hearing booms that were "like a sonic wave." But he wasn't worried because he had heard similar noises before and realized they were coming from a site used by the Endicott police department's bomb squad.

The man said it had been about a year since he last heard similar blasts. But because he had a sense of what was going on, "it didn't bother me."

Endicott police chief Patrick Garey confirmed that his agency's bomb unit was conducting training at the time at Tri-Cities Airport. The airport is directly across the Susquehanna River from Ross Corners.

Garey said the squad sometimes detonates training devices or items that have been seized by his department or other area police agencies. He said the bomb squad members use the airport site for training throughout the year.
