Out-of-Control Car Interrupts Dinner at Endwell Pizzeria
Diners, pickup customers and employees got a big surprise when a car smashed through a window at a popular pizza joint in the town of Union.
A sport utility vehicle drove into the Nirchi's Pizza shop at 701 Taft Avenue in Endwell around 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Authorities said the Toyota Corolla was operated by an 87-year-old man. Investigators said his foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal, causing the SUV to go over a walkway and into the restaurant.
He was evaluated by medics at the scene. A woman and a girl who were inside the pizzeria at the time of the crash also were examined but no one was taken to the hospital.
Two women and two children remained inside the restaurant's dining area while medics were performing their evaluations.
The driver, whose name was not released by the Broome County Sheriff's Office, was not ticketed.
Glass, bricks and other debris were scattered around the damaged car. The vehicle was pulled out and hauled away on a flatbed truck less than an hour after the crash occurred.
Broome County sheriff's deputies, the Union Center Fire Department and the Union Volunteer Emergency Squad were dispatched to the scene.
A sheriff's deputy was unable to provide any information about possible injuries or other details about the crash.
