The Hunt Is On For New York’s Ultimate Burger
"Mmm, burger"- Homer Simpson, The Simpsons, season 4 episode 6.
So, what New York State restaurant/diner/pub/bar makes the best burger? Well, that's a tough question. There are so many places that serve up a delicious burger with their own spin and toppings on it.
I imagine most of us have our go-to place for a yummy burger (not counting your own creation, of course). I have my favorite place to go, but I'll keep that to myself.
The Best New York State Burger Competition Is On!
The New York State Beef Council is currently searching for the best burger in New York State, taking nominations through March 14, 2026. Once all the entries are in, voting for the nominations will begin on March 18th through April 10th on the New York State Beef Council website, but hurry, because time is running out for nominations.
Rules? They've Got Rules!
According to the rules, anyone can nominate a hamburger from a New York State restaurant. But, the hamburger has some guidelines, including that the burger:
- Must be 100% beef, although other ingredients may be added to the patty.
- Must be composed of a formed ground beef patty/patties served on a bun or other bread product, and can include any combination of condiments, sauces, cheeses, and toppings.
- Components must be placed between the bun or bread pieces or served open-faced on a bread product.
What Is The Judging Criteria?
Glad you asked. According to the Beef Council, a judging panel, which will remain anonymous (I'd love to be a judge, but alas, it's not to be), will select the 2026 Best New York State Burger.
Judging guidelines include:
- Taste – 50%
- Appearance and Presentation – 30%
- Eating Experience – 10%
- Overall – 10%
The New York State Beef Council will select ten burgers as finalists based on the number of nominations each restaurant receives.
Last year's winner was the Ghost Burger from The Butcher's Son on Market Street in my hometown of Corning, New York! This winning burger consists of two smashed patties, bacon, candied jalapenos, jalapeño basil pickles, provolone, and BBQ sauce.
So, Southern Tier New York, let's keep the title in our part of the state (or I'd even be happy with a winner from Central New York). Get your nomination in for the 2026 New York State best burger now!
