Child Care Center to Open in Former Johnson City Grocery Store
An abandoned supermarket building in Westover is being transformed into a modern child care center.
United Health Services is developing a child care facility at 619 Main Street, just west of Johnson City.
The 18,000-square-foot building had been home to an Aldi grocery store for nearly a quarter-century. Aldi moved from the site in October 2020 when the company opened a larger unit on Harry L. Drive.
UHS announced plans for the child care center last year. The healthcare network is leasing the space for the new facility, which is expected to open in about two months.
Center director Maureen Mecca said 43 children already have been enrolled in the program. It will have a capacity of 82 kids.
The facility will be available for UHS employees and for area residents. It will serve children between 6 weeks and 6 years old. The center will have specially-designed classrooms for children across that age range.
UHS is partnering with Bright Horizons, which will provide a structured educational curriculum.
