Binghamton Convenience Store Proposes New Fueling Station Project
A Binghamton business that was prevented from adding gasoline pumps is seeking permission for another type of fueling station.
The owners of EZ Food Mart at 333 Prospect Street in the First Ward want to install charging facilities for electric vehicles.
The city's planning commission last May rejected a request by the store operators to establish a gas station.
The business is owned by KSJD LLC of Vestal. The small shop has operated at the site for more than a decade. It's located on an oddly-shaped parcel between Glenwood Avenue and Tracy Street.
The planning commission refused to approve the plan to add gasoline pumps after health, safety and environmental concerns were raised by neighbors and the Prospect Terrace Fire Department.
The revised proposal calls for two standards with a total of four "quick" charging stations on the west side of the property.
A man who lives near the convenience store wrote a letter to the planning commission opposing the project. He expressed concerns about potential traffic problems that could be caused by the fueling facility.
The new project has been approved by the commission. But it can't move forward without a zoning change.
The vehicle fuel station would be located on a section of the property now zoned residential.
The business operators are seeking a zoning variance to allow the charging station to be developed where it currently is not permitted.
A public hearing on the project has been scheduled for November 18 at 5:20 p.m. in Binghamton City Council Chambers.
