New York Workers Over 50 Say Finding a Job Is Getting Harder

If you were hoping to retire by now but haven't, you are not alone. A survey from Resume.io found that many Americans over 50 are still working because they can't afford to retire.

Two out of three people said money problems have forced them to work longer than they planned. For many families in New York, higher prices are making retirement harder to reach.

Higher Costs Are Keeping People at Work

The survey asked 600 job seekers who are 50 and older about their experiences. Nearly half said they are looking for work because everything costs more. Others said they need a better paying job or that their retirement income is not enough to pay their bills.

Many Feel They Need to Hide Their Age

Many older workers worry that their age could make it harder to get hired. Half of the people surveyed said they feel pressure to hide their age so employers will think they are better with computer. More than one in three said they avoid talking about their age while looking for a job.

Most Think Age Matters During Hiring

Almost nine out of 10 people in the survey believe older workers face age discrimination when they apply for jobs. Many said they have been asked questions that seemed to be about their age. Some were called "overqualified." Others were asked about retirement, technology, or whether they could learn new skills.

Job Hunting Is Stressful

Looking for a job later in life can also affect a person's mental health. More than half of those surveyed said job hunting has made them feel worse. They felt frustrated or anxious and hoped that their employer would overlook their age.
