Car theft is something no one wants to think about, but a new study shows it is still happening across the country, including here in New York. The study looked at which cars are stolen the most in each state and found patterns that drivers should know about.

Pickup Trucks Are Stolen the Most Nationwide

Across the United States, pickup trucks are the biggest targets for thieves. Chevrolet and Ford pickup trucks were the most stolen vehicles in more states than any other type of car. That does not mean other cars are safe, but it shows that popular vehicles are often the easiest targets because there are so many of them on the road.

What Cars Are Stolen Most in New York

In New York, the most stolen vehicle is the Honda CR V. The next most stolen cars are the Honda Accord and the Honda Civic. These are all common cars, which means thieves see them often and may know how to steal them, especially older models that do not have newer security systems.

New York Is Not the Worst, But It Still Matters

New York ranks in the middle of the country when it comes to car theft rates. There are many states with much higher theft numbers, but that does not mean drivers here should not be careful. Even one stolen car is too many especially if it is yours.

Why Thieves Go After Popular Cars

Thieves go after cars that are easy to sell or break down for parts. Popular cars have parts that are in demand, which makes them more valuable to steal. Older vehicles are also easier to take if they do not have modern tracking systems.

Extra Protection Can Help

Using things like steering wheel locks, car alarms, and GPS trackers can make a big difference. When thieves see that a car is harder to steal, they may move on and look for an easier target.A little extra effort can save you a lot of stress later.
