Several residents of the Southern Tier region were surprised when they discovered that the Gearcor retail store in Johnson City had closed its doors. Concerned about the closure, several people reached out to Townsquare Media, hoping to find answers and determine if the closure was temporary or permanent.

Gearcor was established in 2000. Originally known as "MuckBootsOnline," the company focused on distributing The Original Muck Boot product line to early online shoppers.

Over time, Gearcor expanded its inventory, adding popular safety footwear brands, quality accessories, and specialty safety items to its online store. This growth prompted the need for a larger facility, leading to the move to their first office and warehouse on Valley Plaza Drive in Johnson City.

In 2003, the company incorporated as Gearcor Inc. to better align with its emphasis on safety products for "at work" crews and individuals. By 2009, Gearcor had outgrown its Johnson City location and relocated to a 38,000-square-foot warehouse in Conklin.

Recognizing an opportunity to serve the local community, Gearcor repurposed its former Johnson City office into its first brick-and-mortar retail store in 2012. This retail store quickly became the go-to destination for safety gear, providing a wide range of footwear, apparel, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to businesses, municipalities, and agencies.

Townsquare Media reached out to Gearcor directly regarding its Johnson City store and the company confirmed that, unfortunately, the closure of that store is permanent. However, no specific reasons were provided for the closure.

A source who wishes to remain anonymous tells Townsquare Media that the closure came as a shock to employees who were given no indication the store would be closing until it did, seemingly out of the blue.

For years, the Gearcor store in Johnson City had been a reliable brick-and-mortar destination for safety gear, serving the community's needs by offering a diverse range of products, including footwear, apparel, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Despite the closure of the physical store, Gearcor remains in business, providing customers with high-quality safety gear and solutions through its website.
