Southern Tier Coffee Shops Helping Spread a Life-Saving Message

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and a new community effort across the Southern Tier is encouraging people to think about their health while getting their morning coffee. The Southern Tier Cancer Services Program (CSP) is partnering with several local coffee shops to help spread the word about the importance of colorectal cancer screenings and early detection.

Local Coffee Shops Join the Effort

Five coffee shops throughout the Southern Tier are taking part in the awareness campaign. When customers stop in for their favorite drinks, they will also find information about colorectal cancer screenings and how they can help save lives.

Participating places include: Paula’s Coffee Shop in Endicott, Deja Brew in Norwich, The Nook Coffeehouse in New Berlin, Babes & Buds Coffee Lounge and Boutique, and Seneca Sunrise Coffee in Watkins Glen. They will display materials throughout March to help educate the community about this preventable disease.

Why Colorectal Cancer Screening Matters

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. The good news is that it is also one of the most preventable cancers when it is found early. Doctors say screenings such as colonoscopies or stool-based tests can detect cancer in its earliest stages.

When colorectal cancer is caught early, the survival rate is about 90 percent. For most people, screenings are recommended beginning at age 45. However, those with certain risk factors or a family history of colorectal cancer may need to start earlier.

Free Screening Services Available

The Southern Tier Cancer Services Program works to reduce cancer rates and improve outcomes in the region. They offer free screenings and services for uninsured and underinsured individuals. These services include breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screenings, along with help applying for the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program if cancer is detected.
