It seems like everything has a label on it these days, so when I saw a new label called “the sandwich generation,” I rolled my eyes a bit but the more I learned about the label, the more we realized how accurate it was.

The sandwich generation refers to middle-aged individuals in their 40s and 50s, who have parents who are 65 years old or older, and who are raising a minor child or supporting a grown child. Nearly half of all adults fall into this category.

Those who are part of the “the sandwich generation” are feeling increased financial pressure on both sides – from those young that they’re caring for and those older that they’re also caring for.

According to research gathered by Home Instead, 62 percent of individuals feeling the squish from both top and bottom say that they struggle with feelings of having to be forced to choose between whether to be the child their older parents need them to be or the parent their child needs them to be.

59 percent of the sandwich generation feel overwhelmed and yet, they don’t exactly know how to ask for help. 48 percent of the sandwich generation says they have been warned by their employer that their responsibilities as a caregiver are causing trouble with their job and an overwhelming 76 percent of people say that they feel like society is much more understanding if they need to take time off to care for their child than they are if the person has to take time off to care for an aging parent.

As someone who is in her 40s and has a child under 18 and parents who need support, I absolutely fall into the sandwich generation and this time in life can be confusing and scary.

Those of us who have been faced with the heart wrenching need to help plan care for our parents and face the possibility of putting one or both of them in a nursing home whether because we are not able to care for them ourselves, or because they have medical needs that we cannot meet in our own home, it can be so hard to know where to turn.

If you're in a position where you need to start thinking about nursing home care and have no idea where to start, this might help. These are the top-rated nursing homes in Broome County based on U.S. News and World Reports.
