Authorities say they believe the location of the blast is in Tioga County, about 30 miles west of Binghamton.

According to state police, the site is off Diamond Valley Road in the Town of Tioga.

Investigators say an "unknown type of explosive substance" was detonated in a field. The blast left a hole in the ground but there was no other apparent damage.

The site was processed by state police and the FBI bomb disposal units. Evidence was collected from the scene. Chemical testing is to be conducted at an FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia.

The explosion was heard at about 4:47 p.m. on Saturday. The Tioga County 911 Center received many calls following the blast.

Tioga County Sheriff Gary Howard heard the loud explosion when he was in the Village of Owego. He said he did not know what caused the blast but he said he expected state police investigators would be able to make a determination.

An Owego resident told WNBF News he heard a "sharp rattling and a pretty good rumble." Many people who heard the explosion said it sounded similar to a loud clap of thunder.

People with information about the investigation may contact state police at 607.687.3961.
