The town of Owego could lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue if no camping is allowed at the Hickories Park this year.

There are more than 100 campsites at the park along the Susquehanna River.

Owego town supervisor Donald Castellucci said camping at the park generated about $250,000 in fees last season.

Castellucci said the first campers usually set up at the Hickories in April but that's not happening this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The town sets aside 30 sites at the park for seasonal campers. Many of those return north in their recreational vehicles in the spring after spending the winter in a warmer climate.

It's still unclear when or if New York state will decide to allow public and private campgrounds to open this year. All campsites and cabins in state parks are to remain closed through at least May 14.
