Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is coming under fire for conditions at the County Jail.

The Sheriff’s Office hosted an open house at the public safety facility September 20 that was met with a line of protestors in the Town of Dickinson claiming officials were not attending to the medical needs of inmates.  The protestors were with the group Justice and Unity for the Southern Tier.

Sheriff David Harder says conditions are humane and staff provides services required.

He adds the Corrections Division and Sheriff’s Office have no say in who is sent to the jail.  Those decisions are made by the courts.

Harder says 187 corrections officers oversee inmates in addition to medical staff.

There are currently 517 inmates being held, according to the Sheriff.  Jail capacity is 600.

The Republican says there have been five inmate deaths at the jail in the past 19 years with the most recent involving pre-existing conditions.
