More than $5 million in state assistance has been approved for projects to improve water quality in the village of Endicott and the town of Vestal.

According to Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, a $4.4 million grant will help to develop a new water source to replace two existing wells used by Endicott.

A report from the Endicott Municipal Water Department concluded both of the old wells were "highly susceptible" to many contaminants including bacteria, pesticides and metals. The total cost of the project is $7.3 million.

Endicott also receive a $75,000 grant for infrastructure improvements. The total cost of the planned work is about $301,000.

Vestal has been awarded a $991,000 grant to replace a water main at Vestal and Bunn Hill roads, just north of the Binghamton University campus. The purpose of the project is to provide higher quality water to the town service are and to improve safety by providing better water flow for firefighting operations.

The estimated total cost of the water main replacement project is about $1.6 million.
