Johnson City Police and officials with the Department of Motor Vehicles are advising motorists they could be ticketed if their license plates are not readable.

The Village Police posted on social media an appeal for residents to pass along the information about defective, peeling vehicle tags.

The DMV says is was made aware that some older plates may show "declamination (peeling) of their printed coating."    Both the blue and white (Empire blue)  and blue and gold (Empire gold) plates can be affected.

If you have the bad plates, take them to the local Department of Motor Vehicles to be replaced.  There is no fee for the replacement.

The DMV says residents can contact the Custom Plates Unit at 1-518-402-4838 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and a representative will walk the caller through the process.

If a plate is showing natural chips, fading or crash damage, they can be replaced but you will be charged a fee.

Residents will damaged plates would be charged $25 for the new plate and a fee of $33.75 to issue a new registration.  There is an additional $20 if you want to keep your old license plate number.
