The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says it is trying out vehicle-mounted cameras and electronic speed-timing devices to automatically record motorists exceeding posted work zone speed limits.

PennDOT says the state is under a 60-day, pre-enforcement period without sending out violations until March 4. PennDOT and the Turnpike Commission say after the enforcement period begins, automated speed tracking will be taking place only in active work zones where workers are present.

First time offenders will receive a warning letter. But second time offenders will receive a violation notice and $75 fine. Third time offenders will receive a violation notice and a $150 fine.

Selected work zones are marked by signs and are posted on the project website: WorkZoneCameras.PennDOT.gov.
