Drivers of Futuristic Autocycles Don’t Need Motorcycle Certification
The drivers of futuristic-looking three-wheel vehicles known as “autocycles” will no longer have to have a motorcycle license to drive the electric vehicles in New York.
Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo says Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation she sponsored that brings New York in line with 48 other states.
The Endwell Democrat says the change in licensing can open the market for the “green” vehicles to a wider consumer base including Seniors who were concerned that they were not going to be capable of completing the requirements for getting a motorcycle license.
The vehicles, that resemble the Batmobile, are still classified as motorcycles under state and federal law but now can be driven either with a regular motor vehicle driver’s license or a motorcycle license.
Autocycles operate in a way similar to an automobile with the driver seated inside the vehicle instead of straddling a steering mechanism. It also has a regular car-type gas pedal, brake and clutch.
