Driver Dies After SUV Plunges Down Embankment Near Oquaga Lake

A man was killed in a crash in which the sport utility vehicle he was operating went off a roadway and plunged 40 feet down an embankment in eastern Broome County.

Authorities say 42-year-old Brian Ellis of Hancock was partially ejected from the 2001 Nissan Xterra SUV and did not survive the crash.

Broome County sheriff's deputies were sent to Oquaga Lake Road in the town of Sanford around 7:50 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.

Investigators were trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials did not indicate who reported it or when they believe the vehicle went off the roadway.
