A diesel fuel spill occurred in a Binghamton neighborhood after a truck hit a fire hydrant.

Authorities say the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday in the First Ward.

A truck leased to Anoplate Corporation of Syracuse struck the hydrant as it exited a parking lot and turned onto Jarvis Street.

A fuel tank on the right side of the truck was ruptured, causing diesel to spill onto a sidewalk and the street.

Assistant fire chief Michael Griffis estimated about three gallons of fuel was lost before the spill was stopped.

Firefighters used a putty-type substance to patch the damaged tank. An absorbent material was spread on the sidewalk and street to contain the diesel.

The truck driver declined to comment at the scene.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation was advised of the spill.
