A village public works crew discovered human remains while filling potholes in Johnson City.

Police were called to a wooded area on Carpathian Hill late Wednesday morning.

The remains were found northeast of the intersection of Fairview Street and Columbia Drive.

Johnson City police were being assisted by investigators from the New York State Police. Yellow tape was set up a short distance from the roadway to secure a perimeter around the spot were the remains were discovered.

Dozens of Broome County Law Enforcement Academy recruits traveled to the scene in a BC Transit bus. The recruits were used to look for evidence in the woods. It was unclear whether they found anything that might be related to the death.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., a half-dozen investigators brought a black bag out of the wooded area and loaded it into a police vehicle.

The scene is located a short distance east of the Oakdale Mall shopping center.
