Deadline Near for Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Comments

December 5 is the last scheduled day for the public to submit comments to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on plans to develop a lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Endicott.

Some groups requested a public hearing and more comment on the plans following an information meeting on the project at the Huron Campus that was held in October. 

November 15, the DEC agreed to a 15-day comment period that would end in the two weeks following the filing of the call for comment or December 5, whichever came later.

The project Description submitted to the DEC said the facility at 801 Clark Street from Sungeel MCC Americas of White Plains, N.Y. would recycle lithium ion batteries from electric vehicles, cell phones and other devices.

The company says air emission would be treated with pollution control devices and were predicted to be less than 50 percent of major source thresholds.

The original 30-day comment period notice was issued October 2 but as feedback came in, the DEC set the additional 15 day period.

The application documents for the project are on file at the George F-Johnson Memorial Library in Endicott.
