Convicted Animal Abuser Fails to Sign Broome Offender Registry

A Broome County woman is facing a new charge after authorities say she failed to register under the County's Animal Abuser Registry Law.

Sheriff’s officials say 32-year-old Amber Bates of Chenango Forks was arrested August 14 as she had been convicted of animal cruelty, requiring her to sign onto the registry within five days of her conviction but had failed to record required information with the County.  The Sheriff’s office says Bates was convicted on July 22^nd.

Broome County announced the start of an Animal Abuse Registry in December of 2017.  The law requires people convicted of certain offenses against animals to register on the public listing and includes other provisions like prohibiting them from owning or selling animals or volunteering in shelters or at other groups associated with animals for set periods of time under their sentencing conditions.
