According to WBNG, Chenango County is now taking its emergency services to text messaging with Broome County following suit next week.

All major cell phone carriers will respond to the new Text 9-1-1 procedure in Chenango County.

Dispatchers will be notified in seconds when someone texts 9-1-1. The dispatcher will hear a notification before responding.

When the dispatcher has concluded the conversation with the texter, the texter will receive the message "The 911 operator has ended your text session."

Officials say this texting method is NOT meant to replace people calling 9-1-1, according to WBNG.

WNBF reported on this system coming to Broome County in the future previously.
